Introduction

Welcome to the final semester in your certification program. With the practical aspects of web design behind you, we now turn to the theoretical side. There are two goals I hope to achieve this last semester. First, I want you to gain some insight into four cognitive theories: cognitive apprenticeship, problem-based learning, cognitive flexibility and situated learning. Secondly, as you progress through these exercises as members of a group, I want you to constantly evaluate the role collaboration is playing in your learning encounters. Remember all times are based upon (facilitator will determine this depending upon location of participants).

Prerequisites: I am operating under the assumption that you are all completely comfortable with HTML, CGI and Java Scripting, e-mail communication, and can chat asynchronously or synchronously. If you are uncomfortable with any of these media, please let me know so we can adjust or supplement as necessary.

Expectations:

  1. All members are expected to contribute equally to any group effort.
  2. Each group is responsible for keeping your members apprised of what is happening, especially if a member must be absent for any reason.
  3. Groups are expected to assist each other when difficulties arise. Please share phone numbers, fax numbers or whatever you think is needed in case online communication fails.
  4. All contributors, facilitator(s) included, are expected to treat all other class members with courtesy and respect, knowing each individual makes an important contribution to any effort.
  5. Everyone is expected to spend time on the evaluations. This helps me make adjustments along the way and also will assist in the formulation of future classes.
  6. You can expect to hear from me frequently throughout the semester. We are all exploring the issues together. Feel free to contact me as necessary and expect a response within 24 hours.

Practice: As always, it is important to become comfortable navigating the web site. Though we will review these in class, spend a little time investigating each section so you understand how to use the discussion area, what is in the activities and resource area, etc… Please e-mail me if you have any questions, concerns or difficulties. Spend some time in the activity section reviewing the evaluation exercises. It is important for you to know how your work will be evaluated. Additionally, you might be well-advised to print out the instructions for each exercise as you get to that section. That way, you will have a hard copy for reference when needed.

Thank you in advance for all you will do to expand the knowledge of those of us participating in these discovery exercises with you.
