Section 4.3
Search Directory/Yahoo!

Now I've run into a problem. I'm in the Civil War section but there is no subcatagory for Generals

However, there is a subcatagory for people. Generals are people, too, so I'll try that path. If it doesn't work, I can go back up a level and try Units (a General is a unit) or Muster Rolls (maybe Generals are listed as part of the rolls)

• Fortunately, the People subcatagory was the correct choice. There I find a subcatagory listing for Civil War Generals. By clicking that link, I jump to a page that has 34 sites listed that deal with Civil War Generals.

That was quite a lot of work, and I was jumping all over Yahoo. However, sometimes the path is much shorter.

For example, if I wanted to find Colleges and Universities in Alaska, I would start at www.yahoo.com, and click on the Colleges and Universities link; on the next page I would select Colleges and Universities again; on the next page pick the country I wanted (United States); the next page I would pick public or private (I took public); and then on the next page pick the state (Alaska).

It's easier to do it then it is to write about it. You can try the Alaska College search yourself on this page. It uses frames, so you'll need a frames-capable browser. Follow the directions and when you are done, you'll come right back here.

Since Yahoo is a searchable directory, sometimes it's easier to search for a topic then it is to browse for it. Section 4.4 discusses searching.
