Governor Hickenlooper signed into law a bill making Shelter Dogs and Cats the STATE PET. He brought his shelter-adopted dog, Skye, to the signing.
Whether immigration reform passes or not, the United States is going to become a much more cosmopolitan country than it is now. The country will look more like the faces you see at college commencement exercises and less like the faces you see in senior citizen homes.
-- Excerpt from “Beyond the Fence” an editorial by David Brooks in the New York Times
Wyoming has the highest suicide rate in the nation (and the world). mostly by gun.
The brother of a gun suicide victim doubts there's much of a connection between the state's gun culture and its high suicide rate. He thinks it's more to do with the cowboy culture. "The Marlboro cowboy didn't go and get mental health appointments and talk it out with his shrink, and that's kind of the mentality of Wyoming," Wagner says. " 'Man up, you're a man."

Daylight Savings Time is an archaic practice in our modern society. The original reasons for the policies are no longer applicable, and the most cited reason for keeping DST (energy savings) has never been shown to be true ... We should either eliminate DST or make it the year-round standard time for the whole country.

The Golden Dome

Colorado's capitol dome is being re-gilded.

Seven gold ingots, richly gleaming, fit into the palms of two hands. That's all the gold needed, 65 ounces, to regild the entire dome of the state Capitol.

On Monday, a security carrier transported the ingots to the airport, where they are being flown to Italy to be crafted into gold leaf by artisans at a company nearly three centuries old.

The gold comes from Colorado, just as in 1908, when a band of gold miners pooled their resources and donated 200 ounces of gold to gild the dome in commemoration of the state's gold rush.

The new sparkle comes from about $120,000 worth of gold.

Back to Work

So glad it's over...and that it went the way it did.

There are always too many Democratic congressmen, too many Republican congressmen, and never enough U.S. congressmen.

Election Day at last

The first federal election under the U.S. Constitution was held in 1788, and it had the lowest turnout in the history of American elections. Only 11 percent of eligible voters voted. To be eligible to vote at the time, you had to be a white male property owner. But different states had trouble defining what a property owner was.

In Pennsylvania, you just had to prove that you paid taxes. In New York, you had to prove that your estate was worth a certain amount of money. If your estate was greater than 20 pounds, you could vote for state assembly, but your estate had to be worth more than 100 pounds to vote for senator or governor. In Connecticut, you had to be a white male property owner "of a quiet and peaceable behavior and civil conversation."

The Colorado State Song

In honor of Colorado Day, here is the chorus to the State Song, "Where the Columbines Grow"

Tis the land where the columbines grow,
Overlooking the plains far below,
While the cool summer breeze in the evergreen trees
Softly sings where the columbines grow.

Gender Equality

President Obama reflect on the importance of Title IX, which was passed 40 years ago.

Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome

Hickenbloopers
That's how Colorado's Governor sometimes speaks. His wife, Helen Thorpe, says
"John is a dork sometimes, which is of course why I love him. He means well, but he doesn't always say the right thing, and sometimes he is awkward. But we know this about him already: He isn't a typical politician, always ready with a glib comment."

Drone on the Range

Civilian cousins of the unmanned military aircraft that have tracked and killed terrorists in the Middle East and Asia are in demand by police departments, border patrols, power companies, news organizations and others wanting a bird's-eye view that's too impractical or dangerous for conventional planes or helicopters to get. Along with the enthusiasm, there are qualms ...

This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.

What are we paying them for???

The House of Representatives will be in session for 109 weekdays in 2012, and will be in recess for 151 weekdays so members can campaign back in their districts. There are just six scheduled congressional workdays in January, three in August, and five in October.

Corner mailboxes are becoming a vanishing breed.

"Remember the ladies"

On this day in 1919, Congress approved the Nineteenth Amendment, giving women the vote.
One could say that the American women's suffrage movement began in 1776, when Abigail Adams asked her husband John to "remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors" when approving the Constitution.
